Day 8: June 20 - Tour of Lisbon

June 20: Our hotel has a nice rooftop breakfast.  Way to go Barrio Alto.  Today we are taking a tour of Lisbon.  A normal travel blog would include a lot of details about the city.  This one, not so much.  But definitely will try and hit some highlights for future travelers.

ChatGPT: Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. It is mainland Europe’s westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. It is the westernmost capital city in continental Europe and serves as the country’s chief port, largest city, and commercial, political, and tourist center

First observation is they copy stuff and aren't afraid to call it out.  I like that.

No.  We are not in San Francisco

This is a Brazilian copy, but bigger

Rui is our tour guide today.  We are going on a 3 hour tour.  A 3 hour tour.  He seems a little young, but I'm keeping an open mind.
"Lisbon was founded in the 12th century..."

Ha ha Jeff you are so funny.  Actually, this is Rui.  He first explained that cork is one of the largest exports from Portugal.  Cork is produced from cork trees.  I did not know that.  Since Portugal produces a lot of cork, they also need a lot of cork soakers.  To wet the cork during production.  They basically get paid for  soaking cork.  It's hard to soak cork (from what I hear).  But with practice, it gets easier and quicker.

Next we drove by Renaldo's pad.  He owns the top two floors.

Salarez was the Ruler for 40 years, up until the Revolution in 1974.  April 24th is Portugal's Independence Day.  It's hard to believe that the Portuguese people were living under corruption and dictatorship during our lifetime.  Be grateful everyone.  Portugal has rebounded famously over the last 49 years.

Salute Democracy.  Largest Flag of Portugal

This area is where Salazar spoke to the people during is reign.  And I think the Pope is coming to this exact spot in the next few years.

Good morning campers

Next we visited a castle.

It is on a hill top over looking the city.  Kings lived high in those days, and not just because of the views.

My peeps up high.

Me (where's Waldo) down below.

Nice Castle Views

I actually enjoyed the perspective from the street.  It showed how the castle was protected.

The castle was eventually named by a King in honor of St. George.  Jorge slayed dragons and brought home tigers and did some real manly shit.

Nice work Jorge.

Sick views from his crib.
You earned it Jorge.  Hard work pays off.

The castle also maintained a nice collection of cannons

Large size cannon (L)

XL Size Cannon (XL)

Sorry Bro size cannon (SB)

MAXIM size cannon (M)

We learned that many of the King's cannons were tested during the night.  Here is one of the cannon testers.
It's good to be the King

After the castle Rui dropped us off for lunch.  Avillez is a famous Portuguese chef.

Yummy Avillez

After lunch the girls went shopping and the boys headed back to the hotel for a sauna.

After a rest we met for drinks on the rooftop of our hotel

More views from the top

And then walked across the street to an Italian restaurant.  Supposedly Jamie Oliver is another famous chef.  Solid meal.  Pizza, Lasagna, Eggplant and salad.  I'd pass on the dessert.

What a great day in Lisbon!  I'm ready for bedtime....
